Filling the Missing Link

The BOR now had the first two pieces of their system: the DDBS and the FIX/32. All that stood between them and their new system now was a way to integrate the pieces.

Factors in the Integration Process

  • There was no precedent for them to follow. The BOR was trying to construct a system that had never been constructed before.
  • Two independent pieces of software. The BOR was working with two independent pieces of software with two different sets of operating capabilities.
  • Internally developed and commercial products. The DDBS was internally developed by the BOR.
  • Matching Interfaces. The FIX/32 had many interfaces to control devices, but the SCADA system form the BOR had developed was not one of them.
  • Time. Constructing the middleware could take months, possibly years. The BOR did not have that sort of time- their old system was falling apart.
