The BUREAU OF RECLAMATION

The BOR is one of our country’s greatest success stories. The BOR’s story began at the start of the 1900’s when the United States government started to think about expanding their young nation west. The explorers thought the expansion seemed like an easy one- just a matter of moving out across the land. They arrived west to find that they were wrong- very wrong. The land was in a state of disaster. The constant flooding of the Colorado River had washed away all the life.

They could have given up, but the United States remained focused on expanding westward. If a 1400 mile long river stood in their way, then they were just going to have to take care of it. In order to control the river and proceed with their plans for expansion, President Theodore Roosevelt formed the Bureau of Reclamation in 1902.

The BOR got right to work on controlling the river. That was 1902. The year is now 1997 and the Bureau is still working. Their century of work has produced over 150 dams across the West. Standing in the Black Canyon on the Arizona and Nevada state border is one of their most famous dams: the one-and-only Hoover Dam.

What a dam !

The Hoover Dam of 1997 is more spectacular than EVER! It:

  • Stands at 726.4 feet tall
  • Weighs an incredible 6,600,000 tons
  • Has a base that can hold up to 45, 000 pounds per square foot
  • Is the tallest all-concrete dam in the United States today with 3 and ¼ million cubic yards of concrete

These dimensions are pretty incredible, but even more incredible are all the dam’s functions. The Hoover Dam is far more than just a dam. It is a dam, a power plant, and a recreational lake.

What a power plant!

The power plant is what makes the Hoover Dam so phenomenal. Here are some of the features of the sensational Hoover Dam power plant of 1997:

  • It has 17 generators; eight in Nevada and nine in Arizona.
  • Each generator stands at a height of 70 feet, weighs in at a tremendous 2,000 tons, and is the result of three years worth of work.
  • Collectively, the 17 generators power a total of 1,000,000 homes throughout Nevada, Arizona, and California.
